Hi,
If you happen to think you're smart and probably that the person you're speaking with will have hard time without you, please quickly open google and look for the closest therapist in your area.
This can be summarised as a short story on how NOT to deal with admins and staffers alike. The moral of the story is that (almost) anyone is special, but no one is irreplaceable and that feeling yourself "entitled" to something because of "reasons" doesnt lead to what you hope for.
This morning I was approached by a player (his identity will remain secret) that wanted to go back to roleplay on Krenn. This player had a negative opinion on this server and its staff members since long time, but eventually he decided to give Krenn a shot and decided it was worthy of his time. This morning he contacted me to say that he made an application to be a mercenary and therefore he needed some gear for his character, I asked him what items he wanted, and that's how our story begins, brace yourselves...
Step 1 - A small request
He basically wants to start with "medium" tier stuff, easy, comfortable. I remind him that a special character app, where you basically says you want to be a mercenary, it's not enough for all this stuff. This happens dozens of time, people tries to make a high bid to be able to gain some good stuff even if the staffer in front of you will lower it regardless. However, it is always interesting to look at someone else's perception of the world, this guy's thought has worked this way:
1) I'll write down a special character application in ten minutes, not much effort, I just want to play with the gear I want as soon as possible
2) I wont list in my equipment there because other staff members will surely say that it's too much, I'll just secretly tell it to Wlod because I have higher chances to get what I want from him: I know the others will say no straight away.
3) Let's contact Wlod because he's the kindest and I might end up gaining something if I stop being a contentious member of this community for some seconds, I dont care if he's supposedly on leave from staff things
Also, I dont know how a russian helmet is supposed to fit a mongolian-like warrior. But of course, it's not me graduating in history.
Step 2 - B-but I am telling you I - AM - right!
In this second step the player explain his reasons for his gear even though I already told him what he asked is too much, he thinks the server needs a mercenary because there is none on map. He doesnt even consider the idea that slandering publicly my server in the past weeks on the shoutbox and then trying to negotiate to gain his stuff is surely not playing in his favor and it doesnt make him look petty and ridicolous: after all he has his reason to remind me that there is some special situation that favors his requests that I surely didnt notice or taken into account.
At the end, of course, a pearl: he wants a scimitar, even though it's a tier 3 weapon, for his random mercenary. You cannot even imagine how many people ask to be epic soldiers and that they need good stuff just for the look because they're genuine passive rpers by heart.
Step 3/4 - Arent you forgetting something?
Of course, I was so dumb to not remember that a random mercenary also needs proper armour. When I tell him that he wont receive any armour for his mercenary, he asks me what's the point in making a special char for his absolute random, that has been seen countless of times in other scenarios, mercenary from epicland if he cant get any armour. I told him that if he feels like he can go for a normal biography and check the differences in terms of items he can get. People do not imagine that there are players that write MASSIVE applications with walls of text just to have their characters accepted, they think their random merc has something to offer that clearly justifies the tier 2-3 gear OF COURSE TO BE USED JUST FOR PASSIVE ROLEPLAY eheh
Step 5 - A humble request
A classic. I asks him what would he like to have as TIER1 armour and what does he do? He tells me he wants a tier 2 chest piece because some other guards (faction gear) have it and therefore he should have it too (he wants to be an indipendent mercenary). Aristotle would have hired him if they were to meet in ancient Athens.
Not only that! He says that he is not willing to drop any more of what he's actually demanding me to give him. At the end he has already been kind enough to renounce to the helmet... May the Maker give us hundreds of players like this that are clearly not willing to accept the admin's offer! Such a demonstration of understanding, respect for someone else's time and abnegation.
Step 6 - Life takes its toll!... And you should compensate me for that. Also, a small life lesson.
He of course reminds me that what I'm telling him (no tier2 armour) is inhuman, especially considering his personal pace of life. After all, arent we staffers here to appease and satisfy those that - because of their job's hours - need a special treatment? Who cares if other people play on the server and could easily ask the same thing? Also, why should I care the fact that you - as normal player - work in an officer trillions of hours a day?
At the end, he tries to explain me, that I need to bypass my rules and benefit him if I want to have a succesful server that will last for ages. He knows that, and he's of course willing to enlighten me with his wisdom and experience.
Step 7 - THE PASSIVE ROLEPLAYER
We are reaching the end of this magnificent tale which I hope you enjoyed. At the end of our story, the player reminds me that he doesnt care about the gear after having bragged about it for 1 HOUR STRAIGHT, because, at the end, like a real OG, he's just here to rp and have fun. This made me remember some weird stuff of previous scenarios, like asking a Tier 3 sword as "family relic" ofc not to be used to fight. Whether or not what you say is true, regarding the use of actual weapons/armours for passive roleplay, you can just imagine how an absurd-looking and poorly made excuse looks to my eyes.
The terrible barrier between that and the long awaited happiness is just that he's going to play only weekends and therefore, for him, just this time, because he's unique, I should have him have his tiny request of free gear to rp a khergit that "gets drunk the whole time at tavern". Amazing, it's the epithome of logics and dialectic skills. How can you not be convinced after that?
Of course, towards the end, since he said he doesnt care about the items, the player tells me that I either gives him what he wants or he will simply go away. I was of course distressed by the idea of loosing such a great member of this community, and therefore I answered...
Step 8 - The End
Terrible. But in all his munificence and understanding, he reminds me that - I - have still time 'till this evening to reconsider what he said.. ... . ..

Please, dont be like him. And when you come to me asking for free stuff (tons of you did it since Pax1 and Krenn1) remind yourself I'm just making you a favor and stop acting like you are special!
